Short answer: Mammootty returns to Tamil cinema on 20 November 2026 in OM: Chapter 1 – Udhiram – The Blood Wood, his first Tamil release since Peranbu in 2019. If you want to catch up before it opens, watch four films: Thalapathi (1991) for the star power, Azhagan (1991) for the comedy, Kandukondain Kandukondain (2000) for the romance and Peranbu (2019) for the acting. Wikipedia's filmography lists 16 Tamil films before OM, so he has never been a stranger to Chennai, only a rare visitor in recent years.
What is OM and why are people talking about it?
OM is a Tamil action thriller written and directed by Rajkumar Periasamy, whose last film was Amaran (2024). It stars Dhanush, Mammootty, Sai Pallavi and Sreeleela, with Naseeruddin Shah and Indrans in the cast. It is produced by Dhanush's Wunderbar Films with RTake Studios, with music by Sai Abhyankkar. ETV Bharat reports that the story revolves around the illegal red sandalwood trade and a crisis facing rural labourers.
At the film's audio launch in Chennai on Friday 6 November, Mammootty said: "After seven years, I'm doing a Tamil film. My speech will be fun, but the film will be serious. It'll touch your skin." Dhanush called OM a multi-hero film rather than a multi-starrer and named Mammootty, Sai Pallavi, Sreeleela and composer Sai Abhyankkar as its five heroes, himself last.
According to Cinema Express, Mammootty plays Burma Karthikeyan, known as Siya, who is reportedly an international smuggler pursued by Interpol and Indian investigators. Sai Pallavi plays a law enforcement officer investigating the sandalwood smuggling operation. The makers have not released more than that, so treat plot details beyond these as rumour until the film opens.
How many Tamil films has Mammootty made?
Wikipedia's filmography lists 16 Tamil credits before OM, from Mounam Sammadham (1990) to Peranbu (2019). Most of them cluster in the 1990s and early 2000s. After Vishwa Thulasi (2004) there is a six-year gap to Vandae Maatharam (2010, shot as a bilingual with Malayalam), and then another nine years to Peranbu. That pattern explains why a Tamil return feels like news every time, even though he is among the most prolific actors in Indian cinema overall.
- Mounam Sammadham (1990): Tamil debut, per Wikipedia's filmography.
- Azhagan (1991): K. Balachander's family comedy-romance; a critical and commercial success.
- Thalapathi (1991): Mani Ratnam's epic with Rajinikanth, which opened on Diwali day.
- Kandukondain Kandukondain (2000): Rajiv Menon's Jane Austen adaptation with A. R. Rahman's music.
- Peranbu (2019): Ram's father-daughter drama, which premiered at Rotterdam.
Four films to watch before OM
1. Thalapathi (1991): the big-screen duet
Mani Ratnam's Thalapathi retells the friendship of Karna and Duryodhana from the Mahabharata in a modern gangster setting. Rajinikanth plays Surya, a slum-raised young man, and Mammootty plays Devaraj, the gang lord who becomes his friend and protector. Ilaiyaraaja composed the score and Santhosh Sivan shot it. It opened on 5 November 1991, which was Diwali day, and became a critical and commercial success. If you want to see why Tamil audiences still treat Mammootty as one of their own, start here.
2. Azhagan (1991): the lighter side
Released on 25 August 1991, Azhagan was directed by K. Balachander. Mammootty plays Azhagappan, a widowed hotelier raising four small children while three women fall for him. Madhoo made her Tamil debut in it. It is warm, funny and quite unlike the intense roles he is known for now, so it is a good reminder of his range.
3. Kandukondain Kandukondain (2000): the ensemble romance
Rajiv Menon's film is based on Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility and stars Mammootty, Ajith Kumar, Tabu, Aishwarya Rai and Abbas, with A. R. Rahman's soundtrack. Mammootty plays Major Bala, an Indian Peace Keeping Force officer who loses a leg in Sri Lanka and finds new purpose in a Chettiar household in Karaikudi. It opened on 5 May 2000, did well commercially and won a National Film Award. Choose this one if you want a gentler, music-led evening.
4. Peranbu (2019): the one that sets expectations for OM
Ram's Peranbu is the film that ended the long gap, and it is the reason this return carries such weight. Mammootty plays Amudhavan, a father who returns from Dubai to care for his teenage daughter with cerebral palsy after her mother leaves. The film is told in chapters, was composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja, and premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam on 27 January 2018 before reaching Indian theatres on 1 February 2019. Critics praised the performance and the writing. If you only watch one film from this list, make it this one. It is the nearest thing to a before-and-after for what Mammootty can do with a quiet scene.
A Mammootty–Dhanush reunion, in a way
Cinema Express notes that OM reunites Mammootty with Dhanush after the 2013 Malayalam film Kammath & Kammath. The two have rarely shared a screen since, so the combination is new for most Tamil viewers.
How to watch the older films
Streaming rights for older Tamil films move between platforms and change without notice, so we are not listing a service here. Search the title on the platform you already use, or on a free availability tracker, and prefer official uploads. Studio and distributor channels also publish licensed scenes and songs on YouTube, like the clip above. Avoid pirated uploads: they are often cut, badly dubbed and risky for your device.
What this means for Malayalam and Tamil cinema
A Malayalam superstar in a major Tamil release is another sign of how permeable the South Indian industries have become. Mammootty's reunion with Adoor Gopalakrishnan on Padayaatra shows his art-house side, while OM shows his appetite for mass cinema in another language. The other big Malayalam name in production right now is Mohanlal; see Anoop Sathyan's films before L368.
