How Streaming Changed Movie Release Strategy in India

The way Indian films reach audiences has changed more in the last five years than in the previous fifty. Streaming platforms have not just added a new distribution window — they have fundamentally rewritten the rules of how films are released, marketed, and monetized in India.

The Old Model

Before streaming, the release pipeline was straightforward: theatrical run, followed by satellite TV rights (sold before release), then physical media. A film's financial fate was largely decided by its opening weekend. This model favored safe, star-driven commercial cinema and made it difficult for unconventional films to survive.

The Pandemic Disruption

When theatres closed in 2020, the industry was forced to experiment. Major films went directly to streaming platforms for the first time. What was intended as a temporary measure revealed a permanent truth: audiences were willing to pay for premium content at home.

The New Playbook

Hybrid Releases

The most common strategy now is a theatrical window followed by a streaming premiere. The theatrical window has shrunk from the traditional 8 weeks to as little as 4 weeks for underperforming films. Hit films still command longer exclusive theatrical runs as leverage for better streaming deals.

Direct-to-OTT

Mid-budget films that might struggle theatrically now have a viable path through direct-to-OTT deals. Platforms pay upfront for exclusive streaming rights, giving producers guaranteed returns without the risk of theatrical distribution.

Day-and-Date Releases

Some filmmakers are experimenting with simultaneous theatrical and streaming releases. This remains controversial — theatre owners resist it — but for certain types of content, it maximizes reach and revenue.

Impact on Filmmaking

The new release landscape has changed what films get made. Producers now greenlight projects based on their streaming potential as much as their theatrical prospects. This has opened doors for niche genres, regional language content, and unconventional stories that thrive on streaming platforms.
